In a tete-e-tete, Sunil N Kanal, chief technology officer and director (energy management specialist) at Magenta explains how new technology, innovative solutions for energy consumption could protect environment.

-Why did you select 'environment' as your domain?

Sunil N Kanal: Having worked in new construction projects involving offices, hotels, education institutions, malls, mixed-used buildings for 20 years, I could see the wastage of electrical energy and water by owners, tenants etc. This prompted me to think about bringing awareness within the human community. I decided to contribute towards saving our planet for future generations to come.

-Tell us about your journey?

Sunil N Kanal: My journey has been very challenging in terms of education and bringing awareness. Energy and water has been considered to be a commodity because it is easily and abundantly available and has no value, whatsoever. It has taken a lot of effort to educate and convince people for behavioral changes to reduce the consumption of energy. Today, with government and media support, awareness has increased. But still a lot remains to be done.

-What kind of investment has gone into it?

Sunil N Kanal: As mentioned earlier, I have been pursuing my passion for the past seven years. I have completely dedicated my whole time and effort to energy conservation that cannot be valued monetarily.

- What kind of challenges are you facing in terms of environment?

I have had many challenges in the process to pursue my goal. Some of these are
1. Fixed mindset of corporate, industries who believe that it is their right to purchase anything and everything with sheer money power.
2. Flouting stipulated rules and guidelines by local authorities in green field projects.
3. No concern for equipment maintenance and equipment efficiency garbage in open air and slur disposal fresh flowing water in river / sea.

-Where did you find your inspiration to pursue this venture?

Sunil N Kanal: My passion has kept me motivated so far. I strongly feel we should keep our immediate surroundings clean as much as our own house.

-What has been your 'aha' moment so far?

Sunil N Kanal: Helping clients in reducing their operational monthly expenses and improving their bottom line not only makes them happy but provides a sustainable business environment that helps businesses grow.

-Going forward, what is going to be your growth strategies?

Sunil N Kanal: Making use of new technologies, innovative solutions for reduction in energy consumption that promote environment protection.

-What kind of environmental challenges entrepreneurs would have to deal with, in future?

Sunil N Kanal: Some major challenges for entrepreneurs are, generation of clean and cheap power, use of organic raw material, poor air quality issues.
Local and Federal government need to provide proper and better infrastructure for renewable and wind power, good incentive schemes for producing and promoting grid feed through renewable power, carbon free vehicles, bank loans for businesses based on commitment to environment protection.
