Tips to maintain a work-life balance

Lets balance our work-life with perfection!

We all play two roles on any given day. The first is that of a worker. Be it an entrepreneur or a professional, this worker always has an aim to excel at his work. The second role is that of a person.

How does one strike a balance such that these roles are played to perfection?

Breathe: People often get too overwhelmed by the demands of work and personal life. They tend to get flustered and end up not doing justice to either of the two areas of their life. The first step to striking a work-life balance is to breathe! Yes, breathe before you make any decisions. Think things through in the long term and take your time with making crucial decisions.

Think about Yourself: Entrepreneurs often make the big mistake of merging their self with their enterprise. Refrain from doing so. It is elementary to know that the entrepreneur is separate from the enterprise. Go ahead with the project or proposal or job only if you can fit it in your schedule. Do not let your professional life get merged with or enter your personal life. For example, no client meetings at home or no discussing work during meals.

Slow and Steady wins the Race: Even though many people believe that running up the ladder is better, always remember, that consistency matters more than speed. As kids, we have all learned that slow and steady wins the race. So, take your time, be consistent and do the job right. Keep time for family and personal life.

Organize: This is the golden key for any entrepreneur.  Organize your time and your duties so that you know what to do and when. Set time for all the essentials like food, sleep, rest, family, leisure, friends and work. Stick to the schedule. However, if the schedule is not effective, change it at the first go. Once you are organized, you can club things up so that two or more things can be taken care of simultaneously. Like, you can pick up the groceries while coming back from work, or see the dentist on your lunch break.

Be Fit: While many people forget about fitness while balancing, one needs to know that a fit body can accomplish far more than an unfit one. Take out time everyday to go to the gym, or for a walk or even simply doing yoga at home. Not only will this give your body the exercise it needs, it will also give you the time you need to sort out your mind. Use this time to empty your mind and get refreshed.

Learn to say “It’s OK!”: People often end up spending far too much time and effort on feeling guilty for the mistakes they make whilst balancing. Being a busy person, it is only understandable that at times, certain things may be left out or forgotten. Learn to say “its OK”. After all, you are only human, right?

Laugh: Research shows that those who laugh have better cognitive skills. So, make it a point to enjoy a joke and laugh. If nothing else, buy a book of jokes every week, and take out five minutes every day to read a few jokes and laugh at them. Share them with others, and enjoy a good laugh. A good laugh reduces pressure and keeps you going longer. More so, it would allow you to be more positive and optimistic.

Other than these Seven Deadly points, one should make it a point to have at least one meal as a “family meal.” This helps bonding in the family and allows one to nurture their family better.

All one needs to do is accept that there are only 24 hours in a day, and no one is an exception to it.
